چکیده

This work compares and contrasts two component frameworks: (1) the web-centric Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) framework and (2) the FIPA-compliant multi-agent system (MAS). FIPA, the Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents, provides specifications for agents and agent platforms. Both frameworks are component frameworks; servlets and Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs) in the case of J2EE and software agents in the case of MAS. Both frameworks are specification based. Both frameworks mandate platform responsibilities towards their respective component(s). We develop a framework with which to structure the comparison of the component frameworks. We apply this comparison structure in the context of a 'Data Access' scenario to application development in the respective component frameworks. Furthermore, we have prototyped this scenario in each of the two component frameworks. We conclude with a discussion of the benefits, drawbacks, and issues of developing new applications in each of the component frameworks.

Inter-agent communication in a FIPA compliant intelligent distributed dynamic-information system

This paper describes a traffic surveillance system as a particular case of the class of intelligent distributed dynamic-information systems (IDDIS). The Traffic Surveillance System is a vision-based FIPA compliant multi-agent system that uses the FIPA Agent Communication Language (ACL) and the FIPA Semantic Language (SL). The focus of the work is inter-agent communication and coordination. We h...

Developing multi-agent systems with a FIPA-compliant agent framework

To ease large-scale realization of agent applications there is an urgent need for frameworks, methodologies and toolkits that support the effective development of agent systems. Moreover, since one of the main tasks for which agent systems were invented is the integration between heterogeneous software, independently developed agents should be able to interact successfully. In this paper, we pr...

TAGA: Using Semantic Web Technologies in Multi-Agent Systems

Travel Agent Game in Agentcities (TAGA) is a framework that extends and enhances the Trading Agent Competition (TAC) scenario to work in Agentcities, an open multi agent environment based on FIPA compliant platforms. TAGA uses the semantic web languages and tools (RDF and OWL) to specify and publish the underlying common ontologies; as a content language within the FIPA ACL messages; as the bas...

Mobile-C: a mobile agent platform for mobile C/C++ agents

This article presents the design, implementation and application of Mobile-C, an IEEE Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) compliant agent platform for mobile C/C++ agents. IEEE FIPA standards are a set of specifications designed to ensure the interoperation between agents in a heterogeneous network. Mobile-C conforms to the FIPA standards both at agent and platform level. Mobile-C...

Deploying FIPA-Compliant Systems on Handheld Devices

The market for portable devices is stimulating the migration of technologies originally developed for PCs to the realm of handhelds and wireless networks. Agent technology is following this downsizing trend, and many projects are under way to enable multiagent systems on handheld devices. The possibility of enabling agent technology in the telecommunications world, with its base of several hund...
